John Lewis Hector Floor Lamp Review
What Are You Buying?
1. Antique Style Table and Floor Lamps
The Hector table lamp is perfect if you want to light up a work desk, bedside table or reading nook. It is quite hefty at 2.9kg, but that’s a good thing.
Most of that weight is in the solid marble base, which ensures the lamp stays stable and doesn’t topple over easily. The arm and the dome shade are metal.
The Hector floor lamp is, as expected, much heavier at 15kg. Again, most of that weight is in the thick marble base that holds the lamp in place. The arched arm and the dome shade are made from metal.
Measuring 2.1m tall, the floor lamp is perfect if you want to illuminate a large area such as a reading area, your bedside or a corner of a room.
2. Versatile and Space-saving Design
The John Lewis Hector lamps have an antique style but that doesn’t mean they can only look good with antique or vintage decor.
For one, the lamps are antique but with some modern elements. The black marble bases and the slim arms are undoubtedly modern. The metal arm and dome also have a hint of industrial and rustic style.
This versatile design means the John Lewis desk and floor lamps go well with any decor whether it’s vintage, mid-century, modern or contemporary. They look great in a rustic family home or a chic loft apartment.
Both lamps are available in two colour options: brass/black and all-black for the desk lamp and brass/black and nickel/white for the floor lamp. So you can choose which colour will look best in your space.
Another thing we love about the lamps’ design is how much it saves space. The compact base and thin metal arm take up very little space on a table or floor.
The floor lamp is slim enough that you can position it behind the sofa or chair while the desk lamp is small enough to fit on a small desk or table.
3. Adjustable in Multiple Directions
Both the floor and desk Hector lamps allow adjustments in multiple directions. So you can direct the light exactly where you need it.
How Easy Are They To Use?
Neither lamp comes pre-assembled, so you’ll need to put it together. But it’s easy and should take you 20 minutes or less.
One thing to keep in mind especially if you order the floor lamp is that the base is heavy. Remember the entire lamp weighs 15kg. We recommend moving the packages to where you want to set up the lamp before you begin assembly. Once you assemble the lamp, it will be difficult to move it.
Each lamp comes with a 1.5m cable, so you shouldn’t have trouble plugging the lamp into a nearby outlet.
Both lamps have an easily accessible switch — an inline switch for the desk lamp and a foot switch for the floor lamp.
What Accessories Are Included?
Other than the part you need to assemble the lamp, no additional accessories are included. One must-have accessory that you’ll need to order separately is a bulb.
Both lamps use one bulb. The manufacturer recommends an 8-10W ES (Edison-screw) LED bulb. These are the bulbs with a threaded base.
The John Lewis Hector lamps also don’t include a dimmer. If you want the capability to dim the lamps, you’ll need to order a dimmer plus a dimmable bulb.
